Canine Influenza
Recently, the Canine Influenza Virus, H3N8, has received significant press. It is not a new disease; it was first reported in racing greyhounds in 2003. The most recent reports show that there have been confirmed cases in 30 states, with most cases involving shelters or multiple-dog facilities.
Canine Influenza is a respiratory disease that affects dogs; it cannot be spread to cats or humans. Symptoms last 2-3 weeks and are usually characterized by a moist cough, runny nose, and fever. The majority of dogs develop a mild form of the disease, but in a small percentage of cases pneumonia and fatalities can occur. The Bordetella vaccine that your pet may have received in the past does not protect against this virus.
A vaccination for Canine Influenza has recently been developed. We currently have the vaccine in stock, but at this time, the Doctors at Lexington Blvd Animal Hospital do NOT consider this a core vaccine. The true prevalence of the disease is unknown. The effectiveness and potential side effects of the vaccine have not yet been fully determined.
Each dog should be evaluated individually as to the need for the vaccination. Feel free to consult with one of our Doctors or Staff for specific recommendations for your pet.
Animals that will be admitted into the hospital for boarding or grooming at Lexington Blvd Animal Hospital will NOT be required to be vaccinated at this time.
