Our hospital has the unique ability to be able to perform many diagnostic tests that normally would require a separate visit to a "Specialty" Facility. With a board certified internal medicine specialist on staff; we have the expertise and equipment needed to diagnose most medical disorders.
Myelogram: involves inserting dye into the spinal canal through
a spinal tap in order to detect intervertebral disk abnormalities or spinal
tumors.
Cystogram: involves inserting dye into the bladder through a
urinary catheter to detect abnormalities in the bladder wall (such as
tumor, or changes due to chronic infection) or bladder stones that do
not show up on routine X-rays.
GI Barium Series: involves following the flow of barium through
the intestinal tract to detect foreign objects, tumors, and certain motility
disorders.
Ultrasound: An ultrasound is a non-invasive method of visualizing soft-tissue organs. Ultrasound is particularly effective in evaluating the heart and abdominal organs. The procedure is very well tolerated by most animals and can usually be done without any sedation.
Endoscopy: An endoscope is essentially a long fiber optic tube that can be inserted through a body orifice to visualize, culture or biopsy an organ system. We can also retrieve foreign objects from the intestinal tract and nasal passages that in the past required exploratory surgery. Endoscopy is commonly used to evaluate disorders of the intestinal tract, nasal passages, throat and lungs.
Laparoscopy: through 2 small incisions into the abdomen of an
animal air is pumped into the cavity to expand the area and another fiber
optic scope is inserted to visualize the organs. Biopsies can be obtained
without subjecting the animal to complete exploratory surgery.
Skin Testing: Skin testing still remains the procedure of choice to detect inhalant or air borne allergens. It has more reliable results than other methods that utilize blood testing. A series of over 45 allergens is injected into the animal intradermally and the reaction is measured. Our doctors have done extensive training in the area of diagnosing and treating allergic diseases in dogs.
Cancer Therapy: Many types of animal cancer are effectively treated with chemotherapy and with much fewer side effects than seen in human patients.
