CASE #5
|
Pepper
|

| |
Pepper is a 16-year-old female mixed breed. Even though she is getting
older, she was the picture of health until May of this year. Her owner
noted that she began vomiting and closely monitored her condition.
When her signs failed to resolve at home, Pepper came in to visit
her veterinarian at Lexington Blvd. Animal Hospital. A thorough exam
revealed a tender abdomen, and the Veterinarian suspected a foreign
object was lodged in her intestine. A couple of radiographs (x-rays)
revealed that her intestine was indeed in distress. The fact that
her owner caught the condition early made surgery a quick and relatively
simple operation.
Dogs and cats are naturally curious animals, making foreign objects
a common cause of vomiting. While balls, bones, and towels cause most
problems in dogs, cats are known to swallow string and ribbon. Pepper
had actually eaten some thick cord-like material. In cases of obstruction,
the object often must be removed by either endoscopy or surgery. Endoscopy
is the least invasive approach, allowing objects in the stomach to
be visualized and removed through the mouth. For Pepper, surgery was
required due to the location of the object. Had her owner waited,
Pepper's life could have been jeopardized and surgery would have been
much more complex. In the end, the material was dislodged and none
of the intestine required removal. Pepper went home to enjoy dinner
the next day and is happy and healthy today thanks to an attentive
owner and timely veterinary care.
