CASE #12
|
Beaudreaux
|
 |
| |
Beaudreaux is a 2 year-old neutered male dachshund who is known for
getting into trouble! Like many dachshunds, Beau will eat just about
anything he can get into his mouth. Some even call him the little
goat! His dietary indiscretion did seem to get the better of him one
day when his owner noted that he had chewed up hid pet bed and had
strewn cotton all over the floor. Beau was not feeling well. He was
gagging and swallowing as if something was lodged in his throat.
A thorough examination at Lexington Boulevard Animal Hospital revealed
an abdominal enlargement suggestive of a foreign object obstructing
the stomach. These obstructions can be removed in two ways, surgery
or endoscopy. Endoscopy makes use of a slender tube with a camera
on the tip to visualize and grasp objects in the stomach. This approach
eliminates the need for surgery and a potentially prolonged recovery.
The endoscope cannot remove bulky items or intestinal foreign objects,
but it is ideal for many stomach obstructions like Beau was suffering.
During a short anesthetic procedure, a baseball-sized mass of cottony
material was removed through the esophagus. Additionally, the camera
shed some light on another of Beau's problems. While swallowing the
material, he traumatized the delicate tissues of the throat - causing
the gagging that his owners noticed! Today, Beau is healthy and back
to his old self. We all hope that he can curb his appetite for strange
foods in the future!
